Hello 2012 and the beginning of Project 365.
Somewhere in between reflecting on my past turbulent 2011 year and anticipating what challenges are in store for me in 2012, I decide that this will be my year to pursue creativity. To actively push my boundaries, seek inspiration, take new risks, and make it part of my daily life. After triumphantly completing this past November’s NaNoWriMo challenge, I learned a lot about myself as a writer and as a person trying to foster creativity on demand.
I learned: I am naturally lazy after work. I don’t need a perfect setting to produce. I am fearful of my writing, whether it is good or bad. Inspiration is fleeting. I can still write even when I don’t want to. Hidden gems can be unearthed amidst layers of awful work. I don’t have time to wait for my muse to arrive. And most important of all, creativity is a muscle that needs practice.
Any lifestyle change or endeavor needs to begin as a creative habit. If my goals are to be healthy, a better partner and friend, or a creative writer, I need to focus more on what I’m doing today to make that happen. I need to make an effort to practice that habit as often as possible. And what can beat practicing creativity every day for the entire year?
This is my launch into a creative 2012. Happy new year. Cheers to starting 2012 on an inspired note.
